Am I an English or an Irish Harrington? The SNP Based Answer
Option 1 (Best Option):
If you are a Harrington male and have taken a Big Y700 YDNA test at FTDNA- then the answer will be there in your Ancestral Path and Globetrekker reports under the Discover Tools button.
Look for the Haplogroups in your Ancestral Path:
R-Z255
R-Z16434
R-ZZ9_1
R-FT74015 (Estimated Time to Most Recent Ancestor 900 CE)
Option 2: (Cheapest Option)
If you are a Harrington male and have taken a Family Finder test at FTDNA or have taken a DNA test at Ancestry, My Heritage etc and have uploaded your raw DNA data to FTDNA, and paid a one off unlock fee (currently $USD19) you will have your Confirmed Y Haplogroup Badge on your home page.
Look for the Haplogroups:
R-Z255 (Estimated Time to Most Recent Ancestor 100 BCE)
R-ZZ9_1 (Estimated Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor 500 CE)
Option 3: (Not really an option at all)
If you are a Harrington male who has taken a Y37, Y67 or Y111 STR YDNA test at FTDNA, you do not currently have any SNP data to draw on. You need to upgrade to BigY700 (Option 1) or take (or upload to) a Family Finder test (Option 2) in order to check your SNP against the Irish Harrington signature SNPs.
...and now for a bit of background:
- YDNA is different to atDNA (autosomal DNA) that is tested by companies such as Ancestry, My Heritage. or the Family Finder test at FTDNA.
- YDNA is handed down from father to son. Only males carry YDNA.
- Every now and then, mutations (or variations) occur within the YDNA. These mutations do not cause any physical changes to the men carrying them but they can be detected by YDNA testing.
- There are 2 different types of mutations that occur in the YDNA Short Tandem Repeats (STR) and Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP).
- YDNA STR tests offered by FTDNA e.g Y37, Y67, Y111 look at STRs only.
- The BigY700 test offered by FTDNA looks at both STRs and SNPs.
- Y SNPs can be traced back along the father to son line all the way back to YDNA Adam in ancient Africa.
- A Haplogroup is a group of males who all have, or are said to be positive for, the same SNP.
- A Haplogroup is named for the shared SNP.
- Males are part of many Y Haplogroups stretching back in time to YDNA Adam.
- The chips used in autosomal DNA tests like Family Finder, Ancestry, My Heritage etc are 'pre-loaded' with a few YDNA SNPs- which and how many Y SNPs are loaded depends on the company and the age of the chip.
- Only 3 companies report on the most recent Y SNP from an atDNA chip that a male tester is positive for - 23andme, Living DNA and FTDNA.
- FTDNA has 'pre loaded their atDNA testing chip with a number of common YSNPs. They also accept uploads of raw atDNA data from other testing companies and, for males, report on the most recent YSNP they are positive for and adds this to their Confirmed Y Haplogroup Badge.
